Evaluation Question 3

What kind of institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think the magazine publishing house that will own my music magazine will be the IPC because this is one of the UK's leading magazine and digital publisher. As my media product focuses on artists within the UK, I want to generally want consumers to focus on what kind of new music happens around in East London. Although they publish mainly rock magazines which the know magazines are Kerrang or Q. For my magazine to be seen or purchased I want it to be distributed on online where the consumer can download it onto their mobile devices or laptop. As I know my my targeted audience are teenagers aged around 14- 20, they are more likely to go online rather than visit a newsagents, where magazines can be found in these retailers and the traditional way of selling my magazines. At this age these people check everything online instead of going to shops to visit.

My magazine will be circulated on a monthly basis because many consumers will not buy this magazine weekly and it would not allow them to save up money. So monthly is a period of time which allows them to save money up  and buy the magazine. Also on monthly it allows my magazine to collect news, interviews and more content for the next magazine. This can enable my magazine to have more contents than most other magazines that circulate its magazine weekly. The price I picked for my magazine is £3.99, this will also charge the same price when the consumer subscribes for more contents which is found on my contents page which they will know to go on my magazine website 'www.wearecentral.co.uk'. One of the IPC's magazines which was 'NME', they had put hip-hop artists within the music which was bad for them because the sales decreased from this sudden appearance of putting hip-hop artists.  This information can be found on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NME

This shows that the NME should not have a genre of music which is not
part of genre content they want, which is why my magazine is going  to be for hip-hop readers only.

Photo shoot for contents page

For this photo shoot I had used my Sony HD camera, my artist would most probably be my main artist for the article focus in the contents page. I wanted to pick a shot where it would make this artist different from the rest, which the reader can see who this artist. The picture above with my artist looking away could be a good example, with the olympic site the article on him would be about a young artist growing up in the area of east London.

However the rest of the images I would not use because it would not fit the contents page I planned, Most of the images were taken as landscape which the image I wanted was portrait. This could allow the images I would use on my contents page to fit perfectly. Also I wanted the image to be match with the artist to show location and and what this means in terms of the artist's status. The image gives the reader the information they need when at first glance with the image of my artist.

I took these pictures with a DSLR camera. I have edited these photos to see the quality it would give if I were to use one of them, the quality of each came out perfect and have decided to use number 1, it shows more of the aggressive side of Hip-Hop, showing his teeth with his braces which make him look unique. It would also relate to the article I would put towards him.

Contents page draft

This is the basic layout for my contents page, at this moment I do not have enough images or different models for my contents.

Front cover 1st draft

Front cover drafting process

My first step, I went on an editing website called 'Pixlr.com' which I put the effect of grayscale's but putting the brightness down. On this program this is where is also made my mast head, sell lines and my button. As you can tell I did not use the program photoshop for any editing of my 1st draft. For the headline including the quote i enhanced the colour of the font to change, trying to look like a gradient effect. However the colour did not seem eye catching as bright as red and would not look professional as I want it to be. During this process I did not realise that I had made spelling mistakes, I spelt the 'underachievers' wrong, this would take a few marks away form a silly mistake. So I could not change this as I had already saved the file and had noticed it late.

For this photo shoot I had sued my Sony HD camera, all I needed was to take a mid shot of the model.

DPS draft

DPS draft

This was my first time using Photoshop, I taught myself how to use the tools and also found guide online to help me try to construct my double page spread. I took the concept of David Baileys photography of having that vintage look, in black and white. I did this incorporate the colors also of just having plain black and white as his clothing overall was black and white. I only specifically made my artist in the black and white effect to show he is the main focus. The background I had blurred out to make the focus on him more effective. For my other page I had put all the text onto there which we would be easier for the reader to find what they are looking for, the interview. I had took the artist name and put it in the middle, fading the B into the plain black background.

I have picked this specific image because it is more related to the quote of 'I will continue to pray, until success bows down before me' which shows he is bent down and is praying, showing the audience what he is about.

Playing with fonts

Here I test out which fonts could suit my magazine well for my front cover, contents and DPS. I needed something that would be plain, simple and very eye catching at the same time so that I don't overdo it. These were from the website 'Dafont.com' and had a variety of fonts to choose from and download, most of these didn't really attract me to using any of these fonts as it is better to keep my house style simple and stylish at the same time.

Front cover, Contents and DPS sketches

Front cover sketch
Contents page sketch
Double page spread sketch - Took  the idea from my inspired DPS
For my front cover, the headline is Skinny B right now, it will be changed to another artist as I want the magazine to focus on another artist so that I have a variety. The layout of my front cover and contents page may change.

Experimentation with photography

In this task we had to to take different types of pictures to do with lighting, composition and positioning of the shot. This task was to help us with how we take our shot to improve our photography for our final drafts for our magazine.
